Breweries and bottle shops in East of England

Flat fields, huge skies and some of the best malting barley in the country: the east of England was feeding British brewing long before it started building breweries of its own in earnest. Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire between them cover market towns, fenland, university cities and a long stretch of coast, and beer has quietly threaded through most of it. It runs deeper than people tend to assume. One writer digging into the region's brewing past found that the counties of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk had between them nearly three hundred breweries, most of them small, parish-level operations that came and went with barely a written record. That world largely disappeared under the twentieth century's wave of mergers and closures, but something like it has crept back in recent years: a scatter of small, independent breweries again working out of industrial units, converted barns and old maltings, plus bottle shops built around showing off what's brewing close to home rather than shipping in the same national names as everywhere else. The coastal towns add their own flavour too, with seaside taprooms and shops that lean into whatever the local water and climate suit. Here's a browse of what's brewing and being stocked across the region, plus any deals genuinely live on the brewers' and shops' own sites.
