Sheffield spreads across hills and the valleys between them, and its beer follows the same pattern: pockets in Kelham Island, more in Neepsend and Shalesmoor, a scatter further out towards Heeley and Sharrow that most people outside the city never hear about. Steel works and cutlery factories left behind a lot of brick and cast iron once the industry moved on, and breweries have been slotting into those spaces for years now, tanks fitted between the old machine mounts and skylights still doing their original job.
A report commissioned by the University of Sheffield once called the city "the real ale capital of the world," a line locals have been happy to repeat ever since, and walking between Kelham Island and the city centre on a Friday afternoon it isn't hard to see why someone reached for that description. Attercliffe adds its own stretch further along the river, old industrial units turned over to brewing not far from the road out towards Rotherham. We note what's live on shop and brewery pages across the city, not who deserves top billing. Whatever the forecast says, someone in one of these units is probably brewing anyway, valley fog or not.
