Breweries and bottle shops in and around Reading

Reading gets written off as a services-and-shopping stopover between London and the west, which is a shame because the beer scene here has quietly filled in the gaps. The town sits where the Kennet meets the Thames, and that stretch of water threads through a lot of it: converted mill buildings, towpath walks that end conveniently at a taproom door, barges moored up outside places that didn't exist all that long ago. Head out along the Thames Valley in any direction and the picture widens fast, through Wokingham and Bracknell, up towards Henley and its rowing crowd, out past Newbury and the villages strung along the old canal. Independent bottle shops here tend to double as something else, a deli counter, a record stack, a spot to get a coffee while you decide what to take home, and they're often run by people who'll happily talk you out of the thing you were about to buy. We cover this whole stretch of the valley, not just the town centre, because the interesting stuff is as likely to turn up in a Berkshire village hall unit as on a Reading high street. It's commuter-belt England, red brick and roundabouts, but underneath that ordinary surface there's a fair bit going on if you know which industrial estate to trust.
