Breweries and bottle shops in and around Newcastle upon Tyne

The Tyne cuts this city in half and somehow that geography explains half its drinking culture too, steep banks, hidden staircases, a valley full of old industry that's been quietly turned over to breweries and taprooms rather than left to rot. Ouseburn is the obvious pull, all converted warehouses and railway arches tucked below the road level, but Newcastle's a stubborn, generous sort of place and its best pints turn up just as often in a proper backstreet boozer with sticky carpet and a landlord who remembers your name. Head along the river or up towards the coast and the towns around the city, North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, keep the thread going with their own harbourside spots and old-fashioned pubs that have nothing to prove. Bring a coat: the wind off the river doesn't care what season it is.
