Cardiff runs downhill to the water, more or less, from a castle at its centre to a bay lined with new-build flats and working dockside industry. That downhill pull shapes a lot of how people move around the city hunting out a pint, and it shapes this page as well. Cardiff proper only tells half the story, because plenty of the breweries and shops worth knowing about sit just outside it, in the towns where the city starts folding into the Valleys to the north, or along the coast either side of the bay. The accents change within a few miles here, and so does the drinking culture, from bay-front bars built for a match day crowd to smaller, scruffier taprooms up in the hills that couldn't care less what day it is. This listing follows that spread rather than pretending Cardiff stops at a boundary sign, because nobody who actually lives round here thinks it does.
