Out on the wind-battered northwest tip of Orkney's mainland, where Rob Hill turned up at Swannay Farm in 2003 to buy an old time clock and somehow ended up with a brewery. Scapa Special, the flagship pale, still accounts for around a third of everything they brew. His son Lewis joined around 2010.
Swannay brew from a former dairy farm on Orkney's mainland that once made cheese rather than beer. Their beers carry proper Orkney flavour: Banyan (navy slang for a beach party) and the mighty Muckle IPA (muckle just means big). Their beers have picked up awards at national and international competitions, which is a decent showing for beer brewed at the edge of the map.
