Steam Machine has been on a rollercoaster of an adventure. Officially founded in 2015, but existing as an obsessive concept for a lot longer, they reckon they were there at the tipping point of the UK's craft beer boom. Nick and Gulen Smith run it, from the North East.
Steam Machine have been at it for a decade, founded by husband and wife Nick and Gulen out of a space they describe as smaller than a Tory living room. The beers lean bold and varied rather than following the crowd: think Lapsang Souchong Smoked Porter at 7.4%, or a trio of barrel-aged imperial stouts: Reed's Rampage (dark rum barrel, 11%), Kidnapped (Lowland whisky barrel, 11%) and Debauchery V (11%). Natural ingredients, diverse techniques, and no interest in following the haze crowd, just beer they're proud of.
