Brewery
Balmalcolm, Scotland
Like all good projects, this one started from a wild idea about building community around beer, a community that supports each other and connects in a local, modern gathering place. Kevin and Julia run it from Balmalcolm in Fife, built with repurposed kit, with the taproom open Thursday to Sunday.
Howe Beer Project, based in the Fife countryside, brew five beers covering a lot of styles. 80 Shilling is a 5% Scottish ale with big malt and assertive bitterness; Auld Muddy Boots a 4.5% stout built from ten layered malts, bringing chocolate, coffee and nutty notes with a hint of salt. Sunshine Daydream is a 5% garden lager, low on bitterness and fruit-forward with a dry, crisp finish. Rocket Surgeon, a 4.9% hazy IPA, changes hop bill batch to batch, while Le Coureur de Cochons is a 5.4% farmhouse saison with a yeast-forward, fruit-and-spice character.
