Independent pub · London
The Canonbury Tavern is a Grade II listed pub on Canonbury Place in Islington, London, a short stroll from Highbury & Islington station. It has been a public house since the early 1700s, and was rebuilt in 1846. A staircase leads to nowhere after a fire took the top floor. The pub has a large garden, which it calls the ultimate hidden gem, and the writer George Orwell is said to have written part of 1984 under the tree there. Inside is a roaring fire, and the menu is seasonal pub food. Young's Winter Warmer has been among the changing beers.
