Independent pub · London
The Dame Alice Owen stands on St John Street in Clerkenwell, London, with tiles shimmering in the sun, and calls itself an old boozer. A pub has stood on the site since 1809; it was built as the New Red Lion and rebuilt in 1924. It is named after Dame Alice Owen, born in 1547, who founded almshouses and a free school. Five hand pumps serve four cask ales and a cider, with Watney's Pale Ale as the regular beer. The pub also serves seasonal pizzas and has a sunny beer terrace. Families with children are welcome until the early evening.
